Welcome To Barnegat Light, New Jersey

long beach island
No one actually knows when native Americans first stepped onto the 18-mile long barrier island that we call Long Beach Island, but it was the explorer Henry Hudson who sighted the area in 1609, and the area described as Barnegat Light was detailed in a deed in 1692 by the English Crown. The name of Barnegat Light comes from two sources – the inlet known as Barnegat Inlet, and the first lighthouse built in 1824.

By 1855 the first lighthouse was in such poor shape that a new lighthouse had to be built, and the Barnegat Lighthouse that replaced it was constructed between 1857 and 1859 and commissioned on January 1, 1859. It is the second tallest lighthouse in the United States and operated until it was decommissioned in 1927.  It now serves as the focus for Barnegat Lighthouse State Park located in the Borough of Barnegat Light. The museum houses the original lens, made in 1847 outside Paris, France.  The Barnegat Light Museum is housed, appropriately enough in the old Barnegat City one-room school, and it and its garden are worth visiting.

The Barnegat City Improvement Company formed in 1881 in order to develop the area for tourism and recreation. It designed the streets, blocks and lots, and the town became unique for owning all its beaches and dunes. That was one sure way to be sure that the open public space would always be used for those purposes!

Barnegat City separated from Long beach Township in 1904, was called that for the next 44 years, and then the people elected to change the name to Barnegat Light in November of 1948, naming themselves after their favorite landmark. The town has weathered hurricanes, had two oil tankers sunk offshore during World War II in the spring of 1942, and see the changes that have affected New Jersey coastal towns down through the years.

Today, the lighthouse is open daily to the public between April 1st and October 31st from 9:00 to 4:30, and the remainder of the year Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 to 3:30.  Nearby you can visit the Edith Duff Gwinn Gardens. The garden and the Barnegat Light Historical Society are located at 5th Street and Central Avenue.

You’ll find comfortable accommodations at Bed and Breakfast Inns, historical inns and hotels, and other vacation rentals in condos, hotels and motels. Barnegat Light is also home to recreational fishing, and you will enjoy browsing the quaint shops of Viking Village in this historic seaside community. With a population of just 764 people year round, Barnegat Light is a great place for beach time, fun time, recreation and dining out.
